How to Backup WhatsApp Chats on iPhone

Have you ever found yourself in a situation where you needed to back up your WhatsApp messages and chats on your iPhone? At times, conversations on WhatsApp hold precious memories, vital information, or historical messages that we want to preserve and secure.

In this increasingly interconnected world, WhatsApp has become a primary communication platform for many. Therefore, backing up WhatsApp chats on the iPhone is a prudent step to ensure that you do not lose such valuable data.

How to Back Up WhatsApp Chats on iCloud

Every person with an Apple ID is granted 5 GB of free iCloud storage. So, essentially, all you need to do is sign up and create an Apple ID on any compatible device to activate and operate an account with the complimentary 5 GB storage. Then, ensure that this account is logged into your iPhone.

If you already have an Apple ID on your phone, then you need to ensure you have enough iCloud storage for your WhatsApp backup. If your storage is full, you’ll need to purchase additional iCloud storage to provide ample space.

Once done, you are ready to go.

WhatsApp has a dedicated backup panel that you can visit in its settings. You can request a manual backup from here or schedule backups on a monthly, weekly, or even daily basis. Here’s how to use it:

  • Open WhatsApp on your iPhone and tap on your profile icon in the bottom right corner.
  • Select ‘Chats’ and choose ‘Chat Backup.’
  • Tap ‘Back Up Now’ to initiate an immediate WhatsApp backup. Optional:
  • Choose ‘Auto Backup’ and select ‘Monthly,’ ‘Weekly,’ or ‘Daily’ based on how frequently you want the backups to occur.

How to Save WhatsApp Chats Through Export

While iCloud backups are convenient, they may not always be the preferred option. If you don’t want to purchase iCloud storage or prefer to store your chats on another platform or device, you can export conversations one by one.

Follow these instructions to export your chats:

  • Tap on ‘You’ in the bottom right to open the WhatsApp settings panel.
  • Select ‘Chats’ and choose ‘Export Chat.’
  • Scroll down the list to find the chat you want to export.
  • Tap on the one you wish to export, and a pop-up will appear asking if you want to export with media or without media
  • Choose the option you prefer, and wait for WhatsApp to zip the file into a ZIP archive.
  • The Share menu will appear once it’s done, allowing you to export the file wherever you like.
